What is "the church" offering its youngest members?
I found myself in a conversation with a few young people who expressed that they are not getting what they need at their respective churches, and they seemed to be more than a little upset about it. Awards
DO AWARDS HONOR TALENT OR MORALITY?
I suppose people are entitled to their opinions, but some comments I've read lately (and wish I hadn't) concerning award nominees are positively scathing. - It occurred to me that Hawkins-penned music is a part of the soundtrack of my teens and twenties...and thirties and forties for that matter (smile). It changed the way I considered sacred music. It wasn't just for Sunday. When I was a teenager, I had never heard a voice like Tramaine's that wasn't relegated to the R&B genre. The harmonies, substantive lyrics, and overall musical excellence of the Hawkins Family was refreshing. Who knew that songs about God and his Word didn't have to be depressing and dreadful?
I'm saddened by the passing of Gospel music pioneer Walter Hawkins, but not without hope.
If we were listening, he sang a long time ago, "I'm going away, to a place prepared just for me..."
I hope that we will all pray for the Hawkins family, and the congregation of the Love Center Church. I pray that in light of all the musical tributes planned for congregations across the country, Ministers of Music, Praise Teams and Choirs will be more committed to offering powerful, Bible- based songs about, and to God during weekly convocations.
I thank God for the contributions of Bishop Hawkins to sacred music in America and all over the world.
