How do you know when God is Speaking to you?

Mark,

We all make bad decisions, we all have our Jonah moments. I just told someone this morning, I have never heard God's voice, but I feel compulsions. Sometimes, they are gentle, other times it feels like a hammer on my heart. For example, I was driving into work one morning and listening to my favorite Christian radio station. Suddnely, there was the hammer, on my heart and on my head. They were having a pledge drive. i kept trying to say that I just didn't think I could afford it, but the hammer got harder and harder. I got into work and picked up the phone and cried and cried and pledged. The hammer went away. Other times, like I said, it can be gentle. I had a friend that needed a new bible, and I felt a nudge. I called my local Christian book store and wouldn't you know it - they had a bible, the version that she wanted, on their table for 75% off. So, she got a new bible, and I avoided a Jonah moment. I think that I would be petrified to actually hear a voice. I don't know if this helps. But this is what I experience, and so am trying much harder to listen.

When God is speaking to you, other voices becomes silent and only His voice is the brightest among them. I think that is the ability to be sensitive to Holy Spirit and be always on one wave with God. And of course we should ask God to develop such ability in us, because all is from God, He is the source of everything. I'm also learning this things in my life...

Brother Mark, our LORD JESUS is alive. so HE talk to us always, but problem is us not clearly hearing the HOLY SPIRIT voice. its not like the audio voice. it clear conscience deep within the our Human heart. i posted the blog page about the two heart. believe or not we do have a two heart. one is so call a heart, in take our body working for the pumping the blood. inyet other Heart is deep in our belly. some time you do have a feel like butterfly feeling in the belly. i did hear the HOLY SPIRIT talking to me, when i am in clear conscience. but not all the time. we living now so much in noise world. also we are to busy our self some time we can not hear what the LORD say to us. but HIS is alive and HE love us to want to talk to us. responding to the HOLY SPIRIT is awesome thing. because we be come a better person. the HOLY SPIRIT talk to us about correcting the our live or convicting the our sin or guide us to the way of life.20Years of Christian journey of life i live, i am still learnning. but one thing for sure our LORD JESUS is good listener. I just ran across your question you posted a couple months ago and I love what the other ladies told you. I know exactly what their talking about...

A couple years ago, I ran across the scripture that says we will know His voice and follow no other. I considered that a promise, so I began to ask Him to teach me how to determine between His voice, My thoughts and Satan's voice.

One morning shortly after that, I got one of those "hammer" moments that Tami spoke of. He said "Be still and know that I am God"!! I knew instantly and immediately that I needed to get really still and listen very carefully because I was about to get the answer.

I affectionately call it my "Dove, Blue Jay and Lawnmower" moment. LOL

To make my story short, He showed me that His voice is like that of a a Dove and is a "Still Small Voice" that is sweet and comforting, soothing and always Biblical. Always feels like a hug, even when He is correcting/convicting me.

My thoughts are like Blue-Jays because they are quick and chattery, confusing and endless. Selfish and Self-centered. That's why He says we must take all our thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ (the Word)

Satan's voice was like a Lawnmower - Irratating, loud and disturbing. Usually based in Fear, Anger or some negative thought or situation. And tempts me to make quick decisions or react based on strong emotions. He can even quote scripture, but because he is a liar and the father of all lies, it will be taken out of context, used inappropriately or distorted..

And...that hearing His voice (the Dove) would be very difficult sometimes, because My thoughts (Blue-Jays) and Satan (the Lawnmower) were often louder, busier and more iriatating, so I have to deliberatly STOP and BE STILL..so I can know (hear) His still small voice. That is when I "know" His voice and follow no other. And why He says we must deligently seek Him in order to find Him.
