New to the group - wondering if prayer is effective? 1 Reply

Hi everyone,I don't want to start a big controversy. I'm really not a confrontational person. I became a Christian on March 5th, 1995. I can almost remember the moment. I remember the conversation I…Continue

I would like to ask for prayer for my family today as a court decides where my nephew will stay.

Tami I really like the 5 finger prayer. I am writing this one down to keep with my everyday readings. I keep a little book that i try to read each morning to get my mind set for the day.

I for one use to find praying a scarry thing to do! I was always hesitant to pray because it was making a commitment to the Lord and i wasn't sure it i want to or was able to do that. I am rather new to my faith and walk with the Lord our God and so i would avoid praying all together.
One day i was in deep thought about how my life was going and i began to talk to God! just like i used to do with my Earthly father before he passing away. I literally had a sit down conversation with God and it has grown into an amazing time of reflection and laughter and crying with our Heavenly father.
I don't look at it as praying anymore i look at it as having a conversation with God and for me that took away the fear of the word Prayer or praying.

This is beautiful - and it is surely worth making the 5 finger prayer a part of our lives.

1. Your thumb is nearest you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you.. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C. S. Lewis once said, a 'sweet duty.'
2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.
3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.
4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger, as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.
5. And lastly comes our little finger - the smallest finger of all, which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, 'The least shall be the greatest among you.' Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

I am posting this out here in 3-4 places, need to get it out.

I read in the paper this morning, the first suspected suicide due to the oil spill in the gulf. Please pray for these people, whose livelihoods are in jeopardy, whose physical and mental health are under barrage. This is such a hard thing, counselors are recognizing the signs of stress taking a toll with no end in sight until the oil pouring out is stopped and even then, this is going to take generations to start to get back to some semblance of normal. I cried, this poor man stopped talking and laughing, losing weight. He was a twin. Please pray for him, his family, his crews and their families and all others that are impacted by this tragedy still happening.

Hi, Im new here. I want to thank everyone on their comments and suggestions. I am currently going through a tough breakup and am learning how to pray in the right way. I feel confused at times as I do want another chance with this girl I am dating, but am trying my best to pray for what I want while trying to acknowledge/follow God's will. I am trying hard to see where to go right now.

I really like the image taht was given to me in "The Shack." The wife in the book called God Papa, and that made it feel comfortable. You know that there will be discipline and guidance, but also unconditional love and understanding.

View pray as a conversation with God. Be open and frank with Him. He already knows your needs, your fears, your desires. God is our father and at times He might be intimating but He is a friend. A friend that you can count on in good, bad or ugly times.

I just finished reading "Fearless" and found the neatest comment and hope that I can get it down pretty well, since I don't have the book with me. It said to pray and name your fears, as they look really funny standing there naked. So, put a name to what you need/want, etc and try to say why you are praying for it. Sometimes, while doing this praying, you are able to better understand what is at the heart of the prayer and realize that you are really needing something else. God at work!
