What do you think?

I disagree, because the scripture that says that Christ would be crucified, has already been fulfilled, as we all know. And also, 1 Peter 3:18 says:

For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
I am going to have to qualify my answer.
If Jesus were to return to Earth and "we (mankind) had our way, we (again, mankind) in all likelihood would crucify Him again".
That said, when He does return, we will not have our way. He will have His way!
Looking through the pages of history, I can see what happens when man has his way.
I'd much rather if He had it His way.
Blessings, Jim
Can I skew the questions a little? Well I'm going to anyway!!! If we throw our eschatology out the window for the moment and say that Jesus could come back, as he did the first time or put on hold the fact that he came 2000 years ago and could come again for the first time. If he came to earth in 2010 would we as a "civilised" world crucify him?

My answer would have to be a resounding NO! Why, because, again we have to put on hold all our Old Testament Prophesy, I'm sure we would come up with some far more barbaric, horrific and longer lasting way to kill him. It would probably involve some "Reality TV show" where he would be tried first by the Jews and then the Muslims and finally he'd be handed over to us the loving Christians who would, no doubt, administer the final blow as we turn our back on him or even worse!!

One of the most chilling lines in all hymns for me is in How Deep the Fathers Love and says "Ashamed I hear MY mocking voice call out among the scoffers". I'd love to think that we would all act in the right way but I know in my heart we wouldn't (I wouldn't).
Jim and Nathan, I believe you explained what I wanted to say better than I could. I always enjoy reading your comments. You are both a blessing.
Undoubtedly there are people who would crucify Jesus again. Nonetheless, when we read the four gospels, we should never forget that Jesus is God. The Jews and the Romans crucified Him because he permitted them to do so in fulfillment of His plan.

Moreover, God has not forgotten us. In a very real sense Jesus remains in the world. As long as we remain in the world:
1. He remains in us. He calls upon us to be His hands and feet. As long as we model Jesus, the world will hate us because the world hated Him. Jesus told us as much (John 15:18-25).
2. He helps us to love each other as He loved us. What we do for the least of our brothers and sisters, we do for Him (Matthew 25:31-46).
I believe the best way to answer this question is to apply it to our own reality now.

Christ lives within our spirits. To harbor unforgiveness, to judge others or not extending love towards others is symbolically crucifying him all over again in the eyes of the unsaved world. We need be Godly examples and look upon the cross everyday to remind us of his great sacrifice because he had to only die once for our sins and the sins of all the world.

The debt has been paid. No one has the power to add anything to the work of the cross. Amen
I'd have to agree..

As a follower of Christ, I've run into the spirit of persecution a lot. The Enemy does not 'play'. He comes to steal, kill and destroy. Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father in Glory. So we're the targets of his wrath. The Chinese Christians who are being martyred as we speak are not less beloved than we are. In a sense, they are the ones the Enemy can get to. And they are a warning that if we don't hang together, we certainly will all hang separately. The freedoms that our founding fathers created are being attacked, again, as we speak.

When I gave my confirmation vows, it made a big impression on me as an 8th grader that they were 'unto death'. That means to and through a painful exit from this life. I intend to keep that vow. The hard part is that society might head that way. It wants so desperately to be unaccountable to anything or anyone.

Thank God that He has not given us a spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind. He upholds us and the deaths of his saints are precious to Him. We have meaningful, impactful work to do while we are here. One thing is to defend our fellow saints. Don't leave stragglers out for the Enemy to devour. Great discussion question Dave. When I saw all the excellent responses, I had to spend a little time to consider what might possibly be added. I do think more of us will see persecution in a visceral sense. We should be ready for it.
Agreed. That is one thing I stress to my students. We have been blessed with safety to worship. With safety, complacency can creep in, and we cannot afford to let that happen. The day may come when we are forced to make choices. Like you, I am prepared to make the right choices and I pray my students will, as well. Also, we always conclude our class with prayer. We always remember to lift up our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters in prayer. Blessings, Jim

My thought is that we (the world) would not crucify him - that would make us far too uncomfortable. We would sneer and make fun of him and try to marginalize him. I think the idea of a reality show would be a definite possibility. How wonderful that we know when he does come, it will be on his terms.

Hello William,

As intriguing as your question is, it really deserves its own discussion space. And it's also a hot topic. I heard from another friend here at MLC that there is frequently a 90 9 1 principle in churches. That 90 percent tend to be along for the ride, 9 percent participate and 1 percent do everything. If you are one of those 1 percent, then the heat is .. well... I'm doing his, hers and their share. Talk to them.

So I urge you to do just that. Open a new discussion with this question and I'll gladly join you there.
When Jesus returns again....no one will have ANY power against him...Now if you are speaking as if He returned as He did before...yes the world still would not recognize Him...They would be about planning his demise....BUT THAT AINT GONNA HAPPEN....gary
