The Bible is full of symbolism and metaphor. John the Baptist embodied the spirit of Elijah. This prophecy of Elijahs return was very important because John the Baptist's ministry was one of repentance.
That was the spirit of Elijah, repentance.

Permalink Reply by mia smith on March 4, 2010 at 9:54am I don't believe so. He was born of human parents and entered life like you and I. Since Christians do not embrace the dogma of reincarnation (other than the second coming of Christ) we would not support the premise of Elijah returning in another life.

Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse." Mal 4:5-6
Maybe you both misunderstood me. The spirit of elijah is the spirit of repentance. This has nothing to do with reincarnation. Jesus plainly says that john was this prophecy fulfilled.
Let me put it this way. We are the image of Christ. We have His spirit dwelling within us yet we are not Christ Himself. We are being conformed to Christ's image daily.
I hope this helps,
